AMD Commits Up to $5 Billion to Anthropic in a 2-Gigawatt AI Chip Deal

AMD will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, which will deploy 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs in Helios racks starting with the first gigawatt in 2027.

AMD and Anthropic announced a strategic partnership on Wednesday that combines a large AI hardware supply deal with a multibillion-dollar investment in the AI company behind Claude. Under the agreement, disclosed in a joint announcement, Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs, and AMD has committed to make a strategic equity investment of up to $5 billion in Anthropic.

The First Gigawatt of Helios Racks Lands in 2027

Anthropic will run AMD Helios rack-scale systems built around AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs, part of the MI450 Series, paired with AMD EPYC “Venice” CPUs, AMD Pensando networking, and AMD’s ROCm software stack. AMD said deployment of the first gigawatt will begin in the first half of 2027. The buildout extends, rather than replaces, Anthropic’s existing use of AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs to run Claude.

Claude Will Help Build Its Own Hardware Stack

Beyond the supply deal and the investment, AMD and Anthropic are launching what they called a multi-year engineering collaboration. The companies plan to use Claude to help optimize software workloads for AMD Instinct GPUs and to speed up development of ROCm, AMD’s software stack for GPU computing. AMD also said it will broadly adopt Claude across its own engineering and product development teams.

“We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Anthropic and deploy AMD Helios at gigawatt scale,” said Dr. Lisa Su, AMD’s chair and CEO, in the announcement. “This collaboration brings together Anthropic’s leadership in frontier AI with the full strength of AMD high-performance computing. Together, we will accelerate AI adoption at scale and establish Helios as a major platform for the next generation of AI infrastructure.”

Tom Brown, Anthropic’s co-founder and chief compute officer, framed the deal around Anthropic’s own capacity needs: “Access to compute is central to keeping Claude at the frontier and meeting demand from our customers. By partnering with AMD across the stack, we are securing the capacity we need and optimizing it for training and serving Claude. Running across a diversified range of hardware lets us map the right workloads to the right hardware.”

One More Line in a Long List of Compute Deals

The AMD agreement adds to a fast-growing list of infrastructure commitments Anthropic has made in 2026 to keep up with demand for Claude, including expanded compute partnerships with Google and Broadcom, a multi-gigawatt deal with Amazon Web Services, and a joint strategic arrangement involving Microsoft and Nvidia. The Verge reported that the new partnership also builds on separate data center capacity deals Anthropic has reached with SpaceX and TeraWulf, and that the Wall Street Journal had reported on the planned GPU deployment before Wednesday’s official announcement.

AMD did not disclose additional financial terms for the $5 billion investment beyond describing it as being made “in the future.” In its own announcement, AMD described Anthropic’s adoption of Helios at gigawatt scale as a major expansion of AMD’s position in the global AI infrastructure buildout.
