Apple Trains Its Own AI Model for China With Help From Alibaba

Apple has trained a large language model built specifically for the Chinese market with technical support from Alibaba Group, Reuters reported on August 14, 2026, citing three unnamed people familiar with the matter. The arrangement would reverse Apple’s earlier approach in China, where the company has relied on licensing AI models from domestic partners rather than building its own.

A Break From Apple’s Old China Playbook

Historically, Apple has used third-party Chinese AI models to bring generative AI features to iPhones sold in the country, since the US AI models it relies on elsewhere, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, are not available there. Training a proprietary, China-specific model instead would give Apple more direct control over its own products in China’s competitive smartphone market, according to Reuters. Neither Apple nor Alibaba responded to requests for comment on the report, and Apple has not publicly confirmed the arrangement.

Qwen, Baidu, and a Regulatory Green Light

The report follows a concrete regulatory step: China’s Cyberspace Administration, the country’s internet regulator, registered Apple’s generative AI service last month, which Reuters said clears the way for Apple Intelligence to reach Chinese iPhones for the first time. Reuters reported in July that the China version of Apple Intelligence would incorporate Alibaba’s Qwen model alongside technology from Baidu, according to Investing.com’s summary of the exclusive, and sources told Reuters the rollout should arrive “in the coming months” after an iOS update, according to The Verge. In a detail first surfaced by Reuters, Apple briefly published, then deleted without explanation, a Chinese-language Mac support guide describing how eligible Mac users could connect Qwen to Siri and Writing Tools.

A Rare US-China Tech Handshake

Alibaba chairman Joe Tsai first disclosed the collaboration in February 2025 at Dubai’s World Governments Summit, saying of Apple: “They talked to a number of companies in China. In the end they chose to do business with us.” The custom model Reuters reported on would build on that relationship, and it arrives as Apple faces mounting pressure in China from domestic rivals such as Huawei, which has advanced its own AI-equipped handsets. Reuters described the arrangement as a rare instance of US-Chinese technology collaboration at a time of broader trade and technology tension between Washington and Beijing, and The Verge reported that it would make Apple the first US company approved to offer a proprietary AI model inside China.

Why It Matters

China remains one of Apple’s largest markets, and Reuters reported that the absence of competitive on-device AI features has been a factor in some Chinese consumers switching to domestic brands. A homegrown, Alibaba-assisted model would let Apple satisfy Beijing’s content and data rules while still shipping AI features tailored to Chinese users, instead of negotiating a patchwork of licensing deals for individual features. It also tests whether a major US technology company can operate an AI model inside China’s regulatory system without handing over control of the underlying technology, a balance that will matter for Apple well beyond this single product update.
