Cloudflare’s AEO Dashboard Turns AI Recommendations Into a Trackable Metric

Cloudflare's new AEO Visibility Dashboard and Agent Readiness score give site owners a way to measure whether AI assistants are citing and recommending them, a gap traditional search analytics never...

Marketers have spent two decades treating search rankings as a proxy for visibility: track the position, watch the clicks, adjust the strategy. Cloudflare’s newest product bet is that this playbook is running out of road, because the entity doing the looking is now just as likely to be an AI assistant as a person with a browser tab open. On Thursday, Cloudflare opened early access to an AEO Visibility Dashboard, built on top of its existing Agent Readiness score, to show site owners whether Anthropic’s Claude, OpenAI’s GPT, and other AI assistants are actually citing or recommending them, something no analytics tool built for the search-engine era was designed to show.

A Blind Spot in the Agentic Web

The problem Cloudflare is describing is structural. In a blog post announcing the dashboard, Cloudflare’s Jack Galilee wrote that “fewer than half of all HTML page requests now come from a human,” a reversal that leaves referrer logs increasingly unable to explain how a visitor actually found a site. When a shopper asks an AI assistant for a recommendation and the assistant names a competitor instead, there is no error message and no alert. As Galilee put it: “There’s no impression count and no missed-click report, so when a competitor gets named instead of you, the sale is gone and nothing tells you it happened.”

Cloudflare’s chief strategy officer, Stephanie Cohen, framed the same shift to Media Copilot: “Being discoverable used to mean ranking on a page. That’s not enough anymore.”

What the Dashboard Actually Measures

The AEO Visibility Dashboard tracks four metrics, each defined in Cloudflare’s own post. Citation Rate is “the share of answers in your category that cite your site as a source.” Prominence measures, once a citation happens, “how much of the answer is actually yours and how early it lands.” Mention Rate tracks “how often assistants name your brand in their answer,” independent of whether they link to it. Share of Voice compares “your slice of citations against those for your competitors.”

To generate those numbers, Cloudflare says it uses its own AI Gateway product to prompt multiple AI models with realistic customer queries, then runs the responses through Workers AI, its own inference infrastructure, to score how citations and mentions appear. That keeps the measurement loop inside Cloudflare’s stack rather than depending on a separate third-party API account for GPT or Claude access. Adweek reported the dashboard addresses a visibility gap that has existed since AI systems began reshaping search results, roughly four years by its count. Businesses can request early access from the Overview tab of their Cloudflare dashboard, Media Copilot reported.

Agent Readiness Comes First

The Visibility Dashboard sits on top of a separate, earlier Cloudflare tool called Agent Readiness, which checks whether AI crawlers can access and parse a site at all before anyone worries about whether they choose to cite it. Cloudflare groups those checks into tiers: quick wins such as “a crawler-readable robots.txt, an XML sitemap, AI-crawler rules, and serving clean Markdown to agents,” followed by deeper technical groundwork, then advanced integration work covering OAuth discovery and the Model Context Protocol, and finally commerce-specific standards like x402 and ACP for sites that want AI agents to transact directly.

That layering matters for the new metrics to mean anything. A site an AI crawler cannot parse will post a low Citation Rate for reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of its content, so Cloudflare is positioning Agent Readiness as the prerequisite checklist and the Visibility Dashboard as the outcome measurement that follows it.

Part of a Push That Started in July

Thursday’s launch extends a framework Cloudflare set out on July 1, when CEO Matthew Prince told publishers that “now that the majority of traffic on the Internet is non-human, we must go further and act faster so that a sustainable ecosystem can emerge,” according to Cloudflare’s own announcement that day. That release introduced Pay Per Use, an evolution of Cloudflare’s earlier Pay Per Crawl program, alongside new default bot classifications and an Attribution Business Insights dashboard, building on the Web Bot Auth identity framework Cloudflare had already shipped. AEO was named as a discipline in that same release. Thursday’s launch is the product Cloudflare built to put numbers behind it: Citation Rate, Prominence, Mention Rate, and Share of Voice.

What’s Still Missing

Cloudflare has not published pricing or a general availability date for the Visibility Dashboard, and early access is limited to businesses that request it through their own account, so independent, broad-based numbers on accuracy or adoption do not exist yet. The measurement is also inherently self-reported from a single vendor’s vantage point: Cloudflare is scoring how AI assistants treat a site using its own sampled prompts and its own model calls, not a neutral third-party audit. For the large share of the web that already sits behind Cloudflare’s network, that trade-off buys a metric that did not exist a week ago. For sites that do not, neither Agent Readiness nor the Visibility Dashboard is available at all.
