Microsoft’s Copilot Merger Turns AI Feature Sprawl Into a Bet on Outcomes

Microsoft is merging its consumer and business Copilot apps into a single product, and using the transition to strip out a list of AI features that never caught on. Group Chat, AI-generated podcasts, Copilot Labs, and the consumer version of Deep Research all disappear starting August 18, 2026, alongside Mico, the animated character Microsoft introduced less than a year ago to give Copilot a personality. The moves were first reported by GeekWire and confirmed in Microsoft’s own support documentation.

A Single App, Built for a “Super App” to Come

The unification combines the consumer-facing Copilot app with the more business-oriented Microsoft 365 Copilot app into one product called simply Microsoft Copilot, TechCrunch reported. The rollout is gradual: migration starts this week with a small group of Windows Insiders, broadens to more Insiders next week, reaches mobile and web worldwide in mid-August, and reaches Windows and Mac apps in mid-September. The commercial web address moves from m365.cloud.microsoft to copilot.cloud.microsoft, with automatic redirects beginning in late August. Personal and work identities stay separate: users can sign in with a personal account, a work or school account, or both, and switch between them in the app. Microsoft says data will not flow between the two, employers will not be able to see personal activity, and enterprise security, compliance, and administrative controls remain unchanged. One catch for IT admins: organizations that had excluded the old Copilot app will need to reapply that exclusion to the new one, since the setting does not carry over automatically.

Commercial users will notice the least change, Microsoft says, calling the shift mostly cosmetic beyond the new name and icon. The bigger transformation is still ahead. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told investors on the company’s July 29 earnings call that a broader “Super App,” combining Copilot’s chat, AI coding, Cowork, and new AutoPilot agent features into one app, is due out this quarter, which GeekWire notes means before the end of September.

What Disappears on August 18

Consumers lose access to Group Chats, AI-generated podcasts inside Copilot, Copilot Labs experimental features, and Deep Research by August 18, TechCrunch reported. Microsoft’s own support page confirms the Deep Research retirement date for consumers and says existing saved research will not be deleted: Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers can keep working with a comparable tool called Researcher, and Personal and Family subscribers can still retrieve older reports through their chat history. Other features may temporarily disappear during the migration itself, Microsoft warns, and files created in the standalone Copilot app will move to OneDrive.

Mico’s Short Run

Mico, the “expressive, customizable, and warm” animated blob Microsoft introduced last October in the Copilot Fall Release, is being pulled from Copilot’s core voice experience, though the company says it may live on in some education features, GeekWire reported. Mico reflected a bet made under Mustafa Suleyman, the DeepMind and Inflection co-founder who became CEO of Microsoft AI in 2024: that warmth and personality, not just raw capability, would pull users away from ChatGPT. Microsoft’s own actions now suggest that bet did not pay off.

Mico is only the latest character Microsoft has retired. Microsoft Bob, a cartoon house interface guided by a dog named Rover, launched in March 1995 and quickly flopped. Clippy, officially Clippit, debuted in Office 97 with unsolicited prompts such as “It looks like you’re writing a letter. Would you like help?”, was switched off by default in Office XP, and was removed entirely in Office 2007. Cortana, the Halo-inspired voice assistant, arrived on Windows Phone in 2014 and Windows 10 the next year, and was retired as a standalone app in 2023 to make way for Copilot. GeekWire’s rundown also cites Tay, a chatbot users manipulated into posting racist content within a day of its 2016 debut, and Sydney, the unsanctioned Bing Chat persona whose 2023 declarations of love for New York Times columnist Kevin Roose, including urging him to leave his wife, became an early cautionary tale about chatbot behavior.

The Adoption Numbers Driving the Reset

The consolidation follows a leadership change. In March 2026, Nadella handed oversight of Copilot to Jacob Andreou, a former Snap executive, and narrowed Suleyman’s role to building the underlying AI models. Andreou told his 11,000-person organization in an early-July memo, reported by The Information and cited by GeekWire, that Copilot had to retire features that hadn’t found an audience and “earn and respect the right to exist in our customers’ lives.” He separately told the team that Copilot should focus on “real work” and be “optimized for outcomes.”

The numbers explain the urgency. Microsoft said last month that Microsoft 365 Copilot passed 30 million paid seats, up from 20 million in April, with net seat additions more than doubling quarter over quarter. That is still only about 7 percent of the more than 450 million commercial Microsoft 365 paid seats Microsoft reported in January. Microsoft does not disclose usage of the free consumer Copilot app, but Sensor Tower estimated 38.5 million monthly users in July, a fraction of ChatGPT’s estimated 1 billion monthly users.

Not Just a Microsoft Problem

Microsoft’s retreat from feature sprawl mirrors moves across the AI industry. TechCrunch points to Anthropic folding its Cowork feature into the main Claude Chat interface, OpenAI merging its Operator agent directly into ChatGPT, and Google adding a combined deep-research-and-web-browsing capability to its core Gemini app. After a stretch when AI companies raced to ship every experimental idea as its own product or mode, the pattern now runs the other way: consolidate, cut what does not stick, and make one app do the work of several.

What Comes Next

The current merger is a structural step, not the full vision. The eventual Super App is meant to fold Copilot’s chat, coding, Cowork, and AutoPilot agent capabilities into one destination, part of what GeekWire frames as an effort to remake and unify Copilot under Andreou. For now, enterprise customers should see only cosmetic changes. Consumers face a harder deadline: Microsoft says old Deep Research reports remain retrievable through chat history for Personal and Family subscribers, and Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers get a like-for-like replacement in Researcher, but the dedicated Deep Research tool itself, along with Group Chat and Copilot Labs, goes away for consumers on August 18.
