Natural Raises $30 Million to Build Payment Rails for AI Agents

Fintech startup Natural raised $30 million to build payment rails for AI agents, positioning it against Stripe's own agentic commerce push.

AI agents can already identify vendors, compare prices, and message a vendor to arrange a delivery on their own. What they still cannot do is pay for it, because the rails that move money between banks, businesses, and consumers assume a human is on the other end approving the charge. Natural, a fintech startup founded in 2025, is trying to close that gap, and it has raised $30 million in Series A funding to do it, TechCrunch reported on July 20. Forerunner founder and managing partner Kirsten Green led the round, bringing Natural’s total funding to $40 million.

  • Credit cards and ACH were not built for machine-speed transactions
  • Wallets, cards, and disputes, rebuilt for agents instead of people
  • Stripe, and a widening field of rivals, are building the same rails
  • The bet is on the number of payments, not just who processes them

Credit cards and ACH were not built for machine-speed transactions

Natural’s pitch starts from a structural problem: traditional payment systems such as credit cards and ACH rely on a human clicking approve, which slows down an agent engineered to act on its own. Founder and CEO Kahlil Lalji has a banking and finance background; his previous startup, Ivella, was a YC-backed banking product for couples that sold to Earnin in 2023, where he then worked as an engineer for two years. He told TechCrunch he tried to avoid fintech for his next venture after being burned by the sector once the Zero Interest Rate Policy era ended, but kept coming back to the same conclusion: “It just feels obvious that agentic payments are going to be structurally the most important problem [in the] space.” He co-founded Natural with Eric Wang, his co-founder at Ivella, and Walt Leung, a former engineering manager at Nextdoor.

Wallets, cards, and disputes, rebuilt for agents instead of people

Natural describes itself as an agent orchestration layer that lets AI agents move and store funds, rather than a wrapper around an existing processor. According to the company’s own site, its Wallet accounts let agents hold, receive, and send funds, with deposits FDIC-insured for over $50 million through a partner bank, Column N.A., under a pass-through sweep arrangement rather than Natural being a bank itself. Businesses can issue cards and credit directly through the platform. Every agent identity ties back to a verifiable legal identity, and Natural says it mediates disputed transactions on a business’s behalf instead of leaving that process to the agent or its operator. The company also advertises 99.99% uptime. Developers can connect through an MCP server, a CLI, an SDK, or a direct API, with listed support for Claude Code and Codex. Natural operated in a beta trial before this round, and Lalji told TechCrunch the startup has made enough architectural decisions to give it a “good shot” at competing with incumbents like Stripe.

Stripe, and a widening field of rivals, are building the same rails

Natural is entering a market its biggest target is already spending heavily to defend. Stripe introduced Shared Payment Tokens, which let an AI agent pass a buyer’s payment credentials to a business for processing, as part of an Agentic Commerce Suite it announced in December 2025. Stripe then used its Sessions 2026 conference in April to go further, announcing 288 products and features in total, including checkout partnerships that let consumers buy through Google’s AI Mode and Gemini app and through Meta, plus stablecoin-based “streaming payments” built on the Tempo blockchain for real-time, usage-based billing. TechCrunch also points to DCVC-backed Skyfire Systems as another entrant, betting on USD-backed stablecoins as the settlement layer for agent payments. Natural says it will support stablecoins too, but is building for traditional bank payments as well rather than choosing one rail, and its team includes people who previously worked at Stripe, Ramp, and Square.

The bet is on the number of payments, not just who processes them

Lalji is not framing this as a fight over today’s payment volume. “The number of payments that may occur in the world may be two or three or four orders of magnitude greater than the number of payments that exist today,” he told TechCrunch, betting that machine-speed transactions expand the total market rather than simply redistribute it. Natural’s site carries endorsements from executives across fintech, including Mercury CEO Immad Akhund, who says “for the power of agents to be fully realized they need to be able to access payments infra,” and Bridge CEO Zach Abrams, who calls agentic payments a shift set to “dwarf human-initiated payments within a decade.” Whether that scale materializes is still unproven; for now, Natural is spending its new $30 million to move out of a limited beta and into direct competition with Stripe.
